About Me

Hi, I’m Danial, an undergrad at USC studying CS + Business.

My love for technology is the wind in my sails. I'm currently a SWE intern at Snap Inc. and an engineering fellow at 8VC (SWE @ Zanbato). Additionally I'm working alongside Draper Associates and First Check Ventures to support irrationally motivated founders solving technical challenges.

I'm also a professional chess player. Here's how I got started and here are my accomplishments in the press. Now I run a global chess school working to combat educational inequity.

My lifelong goals are to always be learning, creating, and curious. I want to be around people who are ambitious and passionate about their work.

Feel free to say hi! I enjoy meeting new people.

Chess

I began to play chess at 7 years old and after my coach began our first class by saying, "Every champion was once a beginner" my youthful imagination ran wild and I was hooked. My early development in chess proved to be nontraditional where my structured classes provided by my school were supplemented by the aggressive, unconventional playing styles I learned from spending my weekends sneaking games in with hustlers at my local chess park. Yet learning these vastly different approaches to the game allowed me to become a more complete player, and after 6 weeks of practice, I could beat every kid in my class and almost defeated my coach. At age 11 I achieved the title of Master, and since then have become a 5-time National Champion and am currently the #1 18-year-old on the west coast of the United States. In addition, I have defeated numerous world-renowned Grandmasters and played some of the best in the world including World Champion Viswanathan Anand and Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura. My peak United States Chess Federation and International Chess Federation ratings are 2420 and 2340 respectively, awarding me the titles of FIDE International Master and National Master/Life Master (top .43% in the world). Inspired to share this passion I created the Asaria School of Chess where I teach students ages 5-80 from across the US, UK, and Asia.

Interests

Reading

After quarantine began I thought this would be a great opportunity to rekindle my passion for reading. During highschool I was always frustrated, as a couple of months after reading a book I always sensed my memory of even the most captivating story lines slowly fading away. Since March I have begun my journey to combat the retention gods now always reading with a pen and sticky notes in hand, mindful of detailing opinions, connections to previous literature, and vocab words I haven't encountered before. Check out what I've been reading on Goodreads! One of my favorite quotes: "Reading a good book in silence is like eating chocolate for the rest of your life and never getting fat." -Becca Fitzpatrick

Tennis

The summer before highschool I knew I wanted to avoid PE at all costs, and after playing semicompetitive ping pong for a couple years I thought tennis wouldn't be too different... Needless to say I wasn't selected to be on the team. Luckily after begging the coach to let me on the team, he agreed to hold a second tryout on the condition that I practice with the girls team (as the only male) everyday after school for the rest of the semester. As I made a fool of myself in front of the entire school for 5 months, I slowly fell in love with the game and eventually worked my way onto the varsity team where I resided for the next 4 years.

Community Service

I have found service to be the most rewarding and joyful passion in my life. Whether it is through the refugee chess camps and community tournaments I annualy organize, my music tutoring business for underpriveled youth, to my work as a Santa Monica Youth Volunteer assiting at my local communtiy center, I always learn the most when I am helping someone else. “We rise by lifting others” -Robert Ingersoll
